The one where we prepare our trip.

Some advice (a few words, really) for whoever wants to do a round the world trip, based on what we did and learned these last few months. =)

Today, let’s talk about a few things you have to think about when you get the amazing – and totally sane – idea to go travel around the world for a whole year. Of course, first, be sure to have the will, the need, the urge, the budget, the motivation to go away, in places so different from your own country, alone – or with someone, or a few friends – for a long period of time. This is necessary to survive all the things you have to do before you go (and, I assume, the trip in itself … But we’re not there yet, so I can’t tell for sure).

So, let’s get busy!

We are planning on visiting 16 countries in 11 months or so. Huge program ahead! So, plan your journey with care, chose what you really want to see in the world, and then, find one of these amazing airlines alliances which can offer you Round the World plane tickets. It’s way much cheaper than buying your tickets one by one. To stick to our bugdet, we had to modify our journey a bit, but we are really happy with what we got in the end! Oh, and by the way, don’t forget about the visas. That will take some of your time, and money too …

Buenos Aires

We had to get immunized against a thousand diseases in the last month : rage, typhoid, hepatitis, yellow fever, … Also, we need to get a treatment against malaria. It’s really expensive, but it’s necessary, if you want to go in South America, Asia, Africa, approach wild bats and rats (no, I’m kidding, don’t touch the bats and rats, please!), visit some jungles and the savanna, and get friendly with a few deadly mosquitoes. I promise, once your nicest friends have told you amazing stories about gruesome diseases and man-eating ants, you’ll go get your vaccines eagerly with a smile on your face.

Well, in a few words, be careful, but don’t get completely paranoiac! Unless you’re doing this particular kind of trip, check the war zones, the countries or regions where it’s not safe to go as tourists, the seas full of pirates, and don’t go there. Usually, you can easily find these info on government websites. And once you have crossed Colombia and North Korea out of your journey, well, just don’t act like a fool … I think just common sense can get you out of some trouble (no, getting hammered and going back home alone at 1am in Mexico is not a really good idea!). And well, get ready for some unexpected stuff anyway! You never know what can happen, but, hey, that’s life!

It’s all for today, you just have to pack your bag, and you’re (almost) ready to go! And, yeah, we didn’t talk about housing … Well, we’ll stay at your place, if you don’t mind! 😉

  1. Hey.
I think you people have put a lot of effort while doing all that research and planning. Thats great. I have one small question. Did you also do the research about the budget ? have any approximation for the total ?

  2. Hey! Thank you! For the budget, yes, we thought a LOT about it: we had to, to see if we could do the trip, and to get some subventions. We are at something like 12000 € / person (but I’m pretty sure it may be less). I will do a blog post later on (once I am done with my master’s, so, in June), with the detail and everything about money.
    Thanks for reading us!
